What you need to know about Internet of Everything in the Philippines
As people has grown more and more connected to the Internet every day, local telecommunications giant SMART Communications believes that it will not take long before the dawn of Internet of Everything (IOE) becomes the single point of transaction for most Filipinos in the near future.
IOE, said SMART Head for Enterprise Business John Eric Alviz, is when the process is put into place to bridge the gap among people, things and machines.
Alviz was among the presenters of the ICT/BPO Conference held in Cebu as part of the Cebu Business Month Celebration in June. As a call to action, Alviz said stakeholders in the ICT industry in the country should create a consortium that will drive IOE by defining industry specific needs.
CISCO, which is a leading brand for telecommunication technology, defines this multi-million dollar industry as “bringing together people, process, data and things to make networked connections more relevant and valuable than ever before—turning information into actions that create new capabilities or richer experiences.”
An example of an IOE process is when data gathered is streamed over to the Internet and processed to high level information. As a means to illustrate, Alviz said that this is something that banks can leverage on to have the ability to make faster decisions on loan applications.
Loan officers out on field, he said, may be given a task to do a background check on information may gather the data and send it over to a process that will translate this information into useful data which the bank can reference in to as basis for deciding on loan applications.
“It is going to take a vertical leap and a number of industries can benefit from it,” he added. Among the industries that can best leverage on an IOE economy aside from banking, would include the government, media, utilities, health and pharmaceuticals and even consumer goods.
Although not yet very popular in the Philippines, SMART believes that they are paving the way to bring this to the forefront for enterprising Filipinos, considering that the firm has always contributed significantly in advancing the mobile revolution in the country. “An IOE economy promotes synergy,” he added.
In 2003, Alviz said, SMART was first to introduce mobility through its SMART Amazing Phone, a smart phone that has promoted the “bring-your-own-device” trend as it encourages people to be connected to the Internet even outside the confines of their homes or work spaces.
In 2011, mobility has evolved into the Internet of Things, which brought about the “rise of the machines.” Through this, people to people transactions have encouraged people to become multi-taskers and a “right here, right now” kind of customer.
In 2017, Alviz said, an IOE economy will prevail in the country, where all machines talk to each other creating efficiency in several processes and develop comprehensive solutions.
“It will continue to be enhanced and to evolve and we will continue on to monitor this upcoming trend,” he said.
